Jefferson County sheriffâs deputy indicted for second time in 2 months in on-duty shootings
A Jefferson County sheriff’s deputy has been indicted on criminal charges in a second, and unrelated, on-duty shooting in 2023.
Thomas Andrew Ernest Cleveland, 28, was booked into the Jefferson County Jail Wednesday at 3:20 p.m. He was released on $30,000 bond 29 minutes later.
A grand jury last week issued the two-count indictment charging Cleveland with first-degree assault and discharging a firearm into an occupied vehicle. That indictment was made public Thursday.
Details about the incident have not been released, but it is believed to have happened April 1, 2023. The victim was in a vehicle when he was shot, records state.
Cleveland in December was indicted in an unrelated on-duty shooting that happened just weeks after the April 1 incident.
That shooting happened about 3:18 a.m. on April 20.
Few details have been released there as well, but there were two scenes linked to the incident – one on Interstate 59/20 near Arkadelphia Road and another at the Pilot on Arkadelphia Road.
The victim’s injuries were not life-threatening.
After the December indictment, Sheriff’s Lt. Joni Money said the deputy had been reassigned to administrative duty pending the outcome of the case. His current employment status was not immediately available.
